50% of Student Union posts reserved for women

Dehradun, 18 Sep: The participation of women students has been ensured at 50 percent in student union elections to be held in state-run universities and their affiliated colleges across Uttarakhand. In this regard, the state government has issued directions to the Vice-Chancellors of all state universities to amend the existing student representation system.
According to the letter issued by Higher Education Secretary Dr BVRC Purushottam, all Vice-Chancellors have been directed to amend the student representation structure in the student union constitution and reserve 50 percent of the posts for women students. The revised system is to be implemented from the current academic session, and student union elections are to be conducted accordingly.
The letter states that more than 66 percent of the students enrolled in state-run universities and affiliated colleges across the state are women. In view of their significant numbers and increasing participation, it is necessary to provide them adequate representation in student unions.
According to Higher Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat, the state government is firmly committed to women’s empowerment. He said that after Panchayati Raj and cooperative institutions, the government has now decided to promote women’s leadership in higher educational institutions. Under the new arrangement, 50 percent of posts in student union elections will be reserved for women students so that they can develop leadership skills and play a more effective role in the decision-making processes of colleges and universities.
Dr Rawat said that directions have already been issued at the government level to all state universities regarding 50 percent representation for women students in student union elections. Universities will soon make the necessary amendments to their student representation systems and classify the posts to facilitate women’s representation. Accordingly, 50 percent of the posts will be reserved for women students and the new system will be implemented in the current academic session, following which student union elections will be conducted in educational institutions.
