Dehradun, 24 Oct: Cane Development and Sugar Industry Minister Saurabh Bahuguna chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat here today to review preparations for the forthcoming sugarcane crushing season 2025–26. On this occasion, he directed the officials to ensure farmers do not face any inconvenience once the season begins. He instructed the sugar mills to prepare an action plan to meet the set targets and emphasised the need for timely readiness of all operational facilities.
Bahuguna directed that all the repair and the maintenance work at sugar mills be completed by 31 October before the commencement of the crushing season. He announced that the Nadehi and Bajpur sugar mills season would be inaugurated in the first week of November, while the Kichha and Doiwala mills would also begin operations in the second to third week of the month. He asked the mill managements to ensure all the arrangements and the services essential for farmers are in place well in advance.
The Minister also asserted that the sugar mills must make at least 65 per cent of the cane price payments for the 2025–26 season from their own resources, as compared to the previous season, to reduce the dependence on the state government for financial aid for payment disbursement. He also directed the officials to ensure adequate availability of sugarcane in proportion to each mill’s crushing capacity and to focus on maintaining machinery in a manner that prevents technical or operational disruptions during the season.
Bahuguna further instructed all the mills to compulsorily review facilities such as accommodation, toilets, drinking water, and tyre puncture services for farmers. He said that seminars should also be organised to ensure immediate redressal of farmers’ grievances. The Minister further directed the officials to submit a report within a week on all kohlus (traditional cane crushers) operating across the state.
