

President Murmu graces Convocation Ceremony of Kumaun University

Nainital, 4 Nov: President Droupadi Murmu attended the 20th Convocation Ceremony of Kumaun University, Nainital, as the Chief Guest, today. On this occasion, the President conferred gold medals and degrees upon meritorious students. The Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), was also present.
Addressing the convocation, the President said that education is the foundation of any nation’s development. Therefore, the purpose of education should not be limited to the development of intelligence and skills among students but should also aim to strengthen their moral values and character.
The President said that education makes one self-reliant while also teaching humility and the importance of contributing to the progress of society and the nation. She urged the students to dedicate their education to serving the underprivileged and to nation-building. She added that this is true righteousness, which brings real happiness and satisfaction.

The President noted that the Indian economy is one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. The government is taking several policy initiatives to ensure continued progress, creating numerous opportunities for the youth. She said that higher educational institutions should encourage students to take full advantage of these opportunities.
The President emphasised the importance of promoting research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the country. She expressed happiness that Kumaun University is committed to excellence in education, research, and innovation. She further stated that a multidisciplinary approach is vital for the effective application of education and research and expressed confidence that the university will continue to advance in this direction.
Speaking about the Himalayas, the President said they are known for their life-sustaining resources, and the preservation and enrichment of these resources is a collective responsibility. She appreciated the university’s awareness and initiatives in the field of environmental conservation.
The President also said that, as an educational institution, Kumaun University has certain social responsibilities. She urged the teachers and students to visit nearby villages, understand the challenges faced by the people there, and make every possible effort to help resolve them.
The President mentioned that India has set a goal to become a developed nation by the year 2047. The young students of institutions like Kumaun University will play a crucial role in achieving this goal. She expressed confidence that through their talent and dedication, these young individuals will fulfill their responsibilities.
Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) said that the day’s event is a moment of great pride for all, as they had the privilege of receiving the guidance and presence of the President at the convocation ceremony. On behalf of the people of Uttarakhand, he extended a warm welcome to the President to Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.
The Governor told the students that the degree they hold will have true meaning only when they connect it with service, integrity, and compassion. He said that the purpose of education is not merely intellectual growth but also the building of character. Knowledge becomes meaningful only when coupled with morality. At a time when society is changing rapidly, qualities such as honesty, discipline, and a sense of responsibility are more important than ever for students.
He urged students to stay away from all forms of intoxication and drugs. True joy lies not in addiction, but in achieving one’s goals, serving others, and creating something meaningful. An educated youth is one who leads themselves and their society in a positive direction.
The Governor remarked that we are living in a golden age of technology. Artificial intelligence, data science, digitization, and cyber security have become integral parts of our lives. To move forward today, it is essential to embrace technology.
He advised students never to stop learning, as every experience in life teaches something new. He encouraged them to respect their parents and teachers, for their blessings contain the seeds of success. He emphasized valuing time as the most precious asset, never compromising on truth and honesty, and staying connected to their roots. He said that those who understand and honor their culture rise to the greatest heights.
On this occasion, Higher Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat, Vice-Chancellor Prof Diwan Singh Rawat, Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat, IG Riddhim Agarwal, along with members of the University Executive Council, Academic Council, faculty members, and students were also present.
