PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun Uttarakhand will not increase vehicle fitness fees for one year. The new fee structure for 15-year-old commercial vehicles will not be enforced until November 21, 2026. During this period, the existing fitness fees will continue across the State. The Transport secretary Brijesh Kumar Sant released the notification following directions from chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The State government took this decision after the central government recently revised the fitness fee for old commercial vehicles with a steep increase. According to Dhami, the State will not impose the additional cost at this stage, keeping in view public concerns. He said that the government wants to ensure that vehicle owners and transport business operators do not face a sudden financial burden. Uttarakhand will implement any future fitness fee changes only after the next revision by the central government. Dhami said that the State government is taking steps that align with people’s expectations and protect their interests. He stated that the suspension aims to support those who operate transport vehicles, including taxi services and commercial fleets, whose costs will otherwise rise due to the revised fee rule. He added that the policy ensures continuity for operators who rely on older commercial vehicles. The CM said that the State remains focused on decisions that address public concerns without delay. He stated that the government’s priority is to support people engaged in the transport sector, including those with limited income. According to him, the move offers temporary relief while the State continues to monitor national policy developments. The department will maintain the current fee structure for vehicle fitness checks until the deadline arrives. The department also clarified that during the suspension period, no increase will be passed on to vehicle owners. With this decision, commercial vehicle operators can continue renewing their fitness certificates at the earlier rates. The government expects this to reduce immediate financial pressure on thousands of transport-related workers and business owners in Uttarakhand.
