Roorkee, 9 Dec: IIT Roorkee, authorised by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, is launching a pioneering programme through which farmers will receive direct income based on scientifically verified carbon credits. This programme will use a digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (DMRV) system in line with international standards. Soil carbon additions and farm-level greenhouse gas emission reductions from practices such as minimum tillage, cover cropping, residue management, agroforestry, and advanced biofertiliser use will be scientifically measured and converted into verified carbon credits. Proceeds from the sale of these credits will be transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts. To highlight the farmer-first approach, the public message is: Direct earnings, local benefits. The programme will begin in the Saharanpur division, which has tremendous potential to generate large-scale carbon credits annually. IIT Roorkee will also establish the necessary linkages between farmers, carbon markets, and global buyers. This programme provides transparently measured, scientifically verified, and high-quality carbon credits to industry—advancing net-zero commitments and promoting regenerative agriculture and rural livelihoods.Prof KK Pant said, “This initiative empowers farmers to participate meaningfully in climate action, transforming their sustainable practices into direct and measurable income. By combining scientific rigor and on-the-ground implementation, IIT Roorkee is committed to empowering farming communities, enhancing their capacity, and creating new economic opportunities through agriculture-based carbon credits.”Principal Investigator Prof AS Maurya of IIT Roorkee said, “Our scientific framework ensures that every tonne of carbon stored in the soil is measured, verified, and converted into income. This programme is not just about carbon credits—it is about reviving soil health, reducing agricultural costs, and creating new sources of income for millions of farmers.”“The state government welcomes IIT Roorkee’s role in this transformative program,” said Ravinder, Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh. “This partnership not only directly benefits farmers with sustainable practices but also strengthens India’s climate commitments.”Large-scale deployment of sustainable agricultural practices under this programme will be launched soon.
