Dehradun, 31 Dec: The long-pending traffic congestion problem in the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) area has been addressed following the firm intervention of District Magistrate Savin Bansal. Bansal’s strict directive finally led to the reopening of the ISBT exit gate that had remained closed for years. Acting on the DM’s strict directives and his expressed displeasure over the prolonged closure, the ISBT management ensured the immediate opening of the gate, alongside the complete removal of illegal and temporary structures at the site. The district administration has claimed that this has resulted in a marked improvement in traffic flow in and around the terminal.
It may be reminded here that, for years, the movement of buses had been obstructed due to temporary constructions and the establishment of a toll post at the exit gate, forcing the buses to use limited internal routes and causing frequent congestion. After the intervention of the district, administration, these structures were shifted and encroachments cleared, allowing the exit gate to become fully operational. As a result, buses bound for Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh are now exiting smoothly through the reopened gate, significantly reducing traffic pressure within the ISBT premises and adjoining roads.
It may be recalled that, during a recent inspection of the area, the DM had also ordered the demolition of an old and vacant National Highways office building that was hampering the movement of vehicles. In compliance with these directions, the building has been demolished, further facilitating smoother traffic movement. The availability of a dedicated exit gate for buses travelling towards Delhi and Uttar Pradesh has brought greater order and efficiency to transit operations at the busy transport hub.
In addition, officials of the National Highways Authority of India have been directed to close irregular and unsafe road cuts beneath the ISBT flyover and replace them with properly planned and secure alternatives, along with clearly marked colour-coded parking zones. Work has also commenced on developing a parking facility by laying tiles on vacant land along the ISBT road to prevent unauthorised parking and strengthen the overall traffic management system. The DM has also instructed the departments concerned to complete all the ongoing works within the stipulated time frame and with due emphasis on quality, with the objective of providing long-term relief to commuters from persistent traffic congestion.
