Chamoli, 2 Jan: Chamoli district witnessed a grave incident on Thursday when a shepherd was attacked by a wild bear while grazing his flock in Khunana village of Nandanagar Tehsil. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Kesar Singh Kathait, sustained severe injuries to his head and hands during the sudden assault. He was later airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh for specialised medical treatment. His condition is now reported to be improving.

According to available information, Kesar Singh had taken his sheep near a school close to the village at around 10 a.m. yesterday, when a bear suddenly emerged from the forest and pounced on him. Taken by surprise, he was unable to defend himself initially and was overpowered by the animal. A fierce struggle ensued, during which he attempted to resist the attack. Gram Pradhan of Khunana, Mahavir Singh, stated that in an act of self-defence, Kesar Singh managed to free himself from the bear’s grip by using a large sickle he was carrying. However, by the time he escaped, he had already suffered deep wounds and was bleeding profusely.
The seriousness of his injuries necessitated immediate evacuation. Arrangements were made to airlift him to AIIMS Rishikesh, where he is reported to be receiving advanced medical care. The incident has caused widespread concern in the area, highlighting the growing threat of wild animal encounters in villages bordering forested regions.
