PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun Based on a complaint submitted by the noted environmentalist Anil Prakash Joshi seeking an investigation to identify the alleged “VIP” linked to the Ankita Bhandari murder case, the police registered a fresh FIR on Saturday at Vasant Vihar police station. Explaining what necessitated the filing of the second FIR, the inspector general of police (Garhwal Range) Rajeev Swaroop said that the original FIR in the Ankita Bhandari murder case had already been investigated, culminating in the conviction of the three accused. “So, a fresh FIR has now been registered regarding allegations related to a ‘VIP’ and with it, the technical decks have been cleared for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into this matter,” he said. Briefing the media on Saturday, the IG further said that the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had personally spoken to Ankita Bhandari’s parents and listened to their concerns. “Considering the sensitivity of the case, he recommended a CBI investigation. All documents related to the case have been sent by the Garhwal Range office to the police headquarters from where these will be forwarded to the Central Government for further actions towards the CBI investigation,” he added. Referring to the issue, Joshi said that recently circulated audio and video clips had brought into fore the purported involvement of some unknown persons referred to as ‘VIPs’ in the murder case. “Although the principal accused have already been convicted, some important evidence may have been concealed or destroyed,” he said. Notably, a special investigation team (SIT) led by a senior woman IPS officer had been constituted to investigate the murder case. The SIT had collected strong evidence, arrested three accused and had sent them to jail through conviction by court. Police sources claimed that thanks to the effective police action and strong prosecution, the accused had not obtained bail even for a single day.
