
PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that based on the 4 P (predict, prevent, prepare and protect) Mantra of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the State government is working on a 10 point agenda for disaster risk reduction. He was addressing a one-day workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee on Friday Dhami said that the State government is continuously working on pre-disaster preparedness, AI based warning systems, digital monitoring system, glacier research centre, drone surveillance, GIS mapping, satellite monitoring, rapid response teams, forest fire early warning system and forest fire management action plan. He added that better coordination is being established between the Disaster Management department, Forest department, NDRF, SDRF and local administration. He praised IIT Roorkee, for playing a leading role in the development of the earthquake early warning system. “The State government, in collaboration with IIT, is working on expanding this system, mapping landslide-prone areas and developing flood early warning systems. For maintaining environmental balance, many initiatives are being undertaken in the State in the areas of tree plantation, water conservation and solar energy,’’ he said. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the workshop will delve into important topics such as disaster risk reduction, pre-disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and community participation. Concrete strategies will also be developed to strengthen technological innovation, research collaboration, and partnerships. He expressed hope that the suggestions received from this workshop will prove useful for the entire Himalayan region, including Uttarakhand. Dhami said that Uttarakhand is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, cloudbursts, heavy rainfall, avalanches and forest fires. Their adverse effects can be mitigated through a scientific approach, timely preparation, and collective efforts. Dhami said that the State government has set up a Spring Rejuvenation Authority (SARA) for water conservation and enhancement. Zonal coordinator Pragya Pravah, Bhagwati Prasad Radhav, Director IIT Roorkee, KK Pant and others attended the workshop.
