Ranikhet, 18 Jan: Government PG College, Ranikhet, in collaboration with the Bhaktivedanta Institute, will organise an online Nobel Laureate Lecture by Prof Carl E Wieman (Nobel Prize in Physics) on 31 January. The programme will be conducted in online mode and will be open to students, research scholars, and faculty members, particularly from government colleges and institutions in rural and hill regions.
Prof Wieman will deliver a lecture on “Taking a Scientific Approach to Science and Engineering Education”, focusing on evidence-based teaching practices and the development of scientific thinking in modern education. The lecture is expected to be academically enriching for both students and teachers.
The collaboration for this lecture is being coordinated through Dr Bharat Pandey, Coordinator, Science Popularisation Cell, Government PG College, Ranikhet, with the college associated as a Knowledge Partner. Speaking about the initiative, Dr Pandey stated that such academic engagements are organised to ensure that students from remote and hill regions receive meaningful exposure to global scientific thought. He emphasised that the real value of these programmes lies in learning, inspiration, and intellectual interaction, rather than certificates.
Dr Pandey recalled that, under the same collaboration, several internationally acclaimed scientists and Nobel Laureates have earlier addressed students and faculty members through online platforms. These include Prof David J Wineland (lecture on 17 November 2024) and Prof Morten Peter Meldal (lecture on 9 April 2025), both of whom shared insights from their pioneering research and scientific journeys.
He further highlighted the Quantum Foundations Special Lecture Series organised from 2 to 7 June 2025, which provided a rare academic opportunity for students and teachers to interact with leading figures in quantum science. The keynote lecture of the series was delivered by Prof Anthony Leggett. The series also featured invited talks by eminent international scholars, including Dr Tim Eastman, Dr Robert S Sunderlin, Prof Alfred Driessen, Prof Antoine Suarez, Prof Christopher Fuchs, Prof David Wallace, and Prof Markus Paul Müller.
The Principal of Government PG College, Ranikhet, Prof Pushpesh Pandey, appreciated the continued collaboration and acknowledged the consistent efforts of Dr Bharat Pandey in organising such high-quality academic programmes. He remarked that these initiatives have played an important role in strengthening scientific temperament, academic confidence, and research culture, especially among students studying in government colleges located in hill regions.
Dr Stuti Joshi, Co-Coordinator, Science Popularisation Cell, noted that such lectures motivate students to think beyond examinations and develop curiosity and confidence. Dr Nidhi Sharma, Member of the Cell, added that interactions with globally recognised scientists help students connect classroom learning with real-world scientific research.
Students, research scholars, and faculty members are invited to participate in the free online lecture. Registration can be completed through the QR code provided in the official notice/poster.
