Dehradun, 19 Jan: Today, a delegation of the Uttarakhand Swabhiman Morcha, Dehradun Metropolitan Unit, led by Metropolitan President Ramkumar Shankdhar, visited the Inspector General of Police, Garhwal Range, Rajeev Swaroop, to discuss concerns regarding the functioning of the police department in the state. As the Inspector General was not available, the delegation interacted with him over the telephone.
During the conversation, Raipur Assembly In-charge Anil Dobhal stated that the image of the “people-friendly police” in the state is gradually deteriorating, and allegations of authoritarianism and arbitrariness are being levelled against the department, which, according to him, indicate pressure from those in power.
Metropolitan President Capt Puran Singh Rawat (Retd), referring to the current situation, described the FIR registered by the local police officer in the Augustyamuni incident against religious dignitaries as politically motivated. He demanded that the said FIR be withdrawn and that the Circle Officer be immediately removed and replaced with a new officer, followed by a fair investigation into the matter.
General Secretary Vipin Negi alleged that the present BJP government is conspiring to curtail religious rights guaranteed under the Indian Constitution by using the police as a shield.
Raipur Assembly President Sanjeev Sharma stated that there is a deliberate attempt to dismantle the state’s police system so that no one dares to oppose anti-people policies of the government. He added that Uttarakhand Swabhiman Morcha will openly oppose this on the streets.
Dharampur Assembly In-charge Satish Manori, strongly criticising the policies of the BJP government, said that governance is being carried out under the slogan of “good governance” while actually practicing misgovernance. He remarked that the people of the State have realised that the reins of the State are in the wrong hands.
Mussoorie Assembly President Rajendra Sood warned that, if appropriate action is not taken at the earliest, the Morcha will resort to burning an effigy of the police department, which is a crucial pillar of the State’s law and order system.
Several members, including Naveen Kaparwan, Preetam Pyare, Govind Singh Negi, Suraj, and others, were present on the occasion.
