Haridwar, 30 Jan: Haridwar today witnessed religious observances and expressions of protest on the ghats of the Ganga after the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of the new regulations issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Brahmin community has welcomed the stay on the new UGC regulations by the Supreme Court. Following the court’s decision, members of the Brahmin community gathered at Malviya Ghat today, where they performed prayers, offered worship to the Ganga and conducted a ceremonial milk abhishek.
During the programme, the participants welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention and prayed for what they described as the cleansing of the government’s wisdom. They also wrote a letter addressed to the President using their own blood, demanding a complete ban on the new UGC regulations.
Several members of the Brahmin community were present on the occasion, including some well revered seers like Mahamandaleshwar Swami Vedmurti Giri of Niranjani Akhara. Addressing those present, the speakers unanimously termed the new UGC regulations a “black law” and warned that if any attempt is made to implement them in the future, they would symbolically perform pind daan of the members of the committee responsible for framing the rules. Swami Vedmurti Giri criticised the silence of the leaders belonging to the Sawarna communities on the issue and said it was condemnable that no statements had come from them. He also reminded that the leaders in the government had not reacted to the issue, while the Supreme Court took cognisance of the matter and imposed a stay on what he called a black law.
Giri further stated that at a time when various sections of society in the country are striving for unity, introduction of such a regulation that had been introduced by the government would only divide people, which, he said, would not be accepted under any circumstances. He cautioned that, if such a law is introduced in the future, the Sawarna community would not tolerate it.
President of Shri Akhand Parashuram Akhara, Pandit Adhir Kaushik, said that protests against the UGC regulations had taken place at several places across the country, but the government remained unresponsive. He described the Supreme Court’s decision as welcome and necessary. Kathavachak Pawan Krishna Shastri alleged that by bringing in the UGC regulations, the government had attacked the Savarna community, which, he said, could not be accepted. He added that the protest held in Haridwar was symbolic in nature and warned that if the regulations are implemented in the future, the Sawarna community would not remain silent.
