Dehradun, 1 Feb: In observance of World Cancer Day 2026, a 6 km Run and Walkathon titled “Run for Life, Walk for Hope” was successfully organised at Doon Sainik Institute, here, today.
The event was conducted under the aegis of Uttarakhand Sub Area and was jointly organised by Military Hospital Dehradun and Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, with the aim of spreading awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle practices.
As a prelude to World Cancer Day (4 February), the event witnessed enthusiastic participation of approximately 250 participants, including Army personnel, their families, and medical students from Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. The large turnout reflected strong civil-military cooperation and community commitment towards a vital public health cause.
Awareness stalls and visual displays were established along the route, disseminating crucial information on cancer prevention, early warning signs, and the importance of timely diagnosis and management. These initiatives played a significant role in sensitising participants and the public at large.
The event was flagged off by the Chief Guests, Brigadier Prafull Mohan, Commandant, Military Hospital Dehradun, and Dr Pankaj, Head of Oncology Surgery, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, who emphasised collective responsibility in combating cancer through awareness, prevention, and early intervention.
The programme culminated with the distribution of prizes to winners and runners-up in both male and female categories, along with a special award for the Best Student Runner, acknowledging excellence and encouraging youth participation.
To reinforce the core message, a symbolic balloon-bursting ceremony was conducted, representing the myths and misconceptions associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment. The gesture powerfully conveyed the importance of scientific awareness, early diagnosis, and effective management.
The event concluded on an inspiring note with the message – “One step, one run, and one life at a time”, reaffirming the commitment to saving lives through awareness, action, and timely care.
