PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami transferred an amount of Rs 1,45,93,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the accounts of 33,251 girls in the State for the financial year 2025-26 under the Nanda Gaura Yojana (NGY) on Thursday. During the event, Dhami said that the State government is committed to promoting the education, safety and employment of daughters from birth. The NGY aims to eliminate discrimination between sons and daughters at birth and to encourage the birth of girl children, he said. Under this scheme, the State government provides Rs 11,000 for the birth of a girl child and Rs 51,000 for higher education upon passing the 12th grade. He said that a total of Rs 11,684.90 crore has been released to 377,784 girls under the programme. “The State government is encouraging higher education for girls and provides a 30 per cent reservation for women in government jobs, which has strengthened the representation of women in Uttarakhand’s government services and significantly improved the work culture in government offices,” the CM stated. He further said that the government is also working to improve the economic status of ordinary women in the State through the Lakhpati Didi Scheme. The NGY has been successful in achieving its goals of preventing female foeticide, encouraging institutional deliveries, promoting girl child education and eliminating gender inequality in society. The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) minister Rekha Arya stated that 5,913 of the girls benefiting this year are newborns, while the remaining 27,338 have received funds after passing the 12th grade.
