DEHRADUN, 28 Feb: The BJP on Saturday hit back at Congress allegations regarding the forthcoming Assembly session, asserting that the House has witnessed four years of disruption by the Opposition and the excuses about curtailing voices, shortening of session duration or the presentation of the Budget would no longer suffice. The party advised Congress legislators to prepare to raise issues concerning public welfare during the session, warning that failure to do so would not only result in another setback in 2027 but could also reduce their tally to “zero”.
State BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt described the recent statements made by various senior Congress leaders about the session as factually incorrect and baseless. He said that if one examines the conduct of Congress and other Opposition MLAs in the House over the past four years, the record stands marred by repeated disruptions and unconstitutional actions. Those who today speak of the Opposition’s voice being suppressed have, whenever given the opportunity in the Assembly, attempted to hold the House hostage to stall constructive debate. When they were unable to block discussions, they resorted to boycotting proceedings and walking out. He alleged that the Congress has never acted as a responsible Opposition in the Assembly. Instead of focusing on public issues and citizens’ concerns, its legislators have remained preoccupied with securing media headlines. In the previous session, he remarked, constitutional decorum was stretched to the limit when Congress MLAs were found sleeping inside the House wrapped in blankets.
Taking a further swipe, Bhatt said that even if Congress MLAs were given not five but fifty days, they would still be unable to engage in meaningful debate on issues affecting the public. He maintained that under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the BJP Government has delivered commendable performance and earned the confidence of the people. There is hardly any subject on which the Government’s intent is unclear, whereas it is the Opposition that appears confused. According to him, this confusion explains why the Congress repeatedly resorts to disruption and attempts to evade debate to prevent its “exposure”.
The Rajya Sabha MP also claimed that local Congress legislators may not be entirely at fault when their high command, the Gandhi family, displays similar conduct in Parliament. He alleged that Rahul Gandhi often avoids participating in parliamentary debates by travelling abroad and, when present, uses language that is unconstitutional and presents unverified facts. When called out for correction, he claimed, the Congress creates uproar and prevents the House from functioning. The same pattern, Bhatt said, has been adopted by the Congress in Uttarakhand, thereby undermining the aspirations of over one crore citizens of the State.
Offering what he termed constructive advice, Bhatt said the Congress should stop worrying about the duration of the session, the procedure of Budget presentation or the Government’s replies, and instead concentrate on preparing its own subjects and questions. He cautioned that if it fails to do so, it may once again resort to theatrics and disruption once the session begins. The people of the State, he said, are perceptive and will assume the role of examiner again in 2027. He warned that a Congress which had already “failed with 23 marks” in the last election should guard against being reduced to zero by the electorate in the next.
