Dehradun, 3 Mar: A one-day awareness programme and demonstration of drone technology on the topic “Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act (PPVFRA)” was successfully held today at ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun, Research Area, Selaqui, under the National Agricultural Innovation Fund and ADP Scheme.
A total of 52 farmers from Kachiwala, Selakui, Rampur and nearby villages participated in this programme. At the beginning, Dr JMS Tomar, Head of Department, Plant Science Division, while welcoming the farmers, the Chief Guest and scientists, elaborated on the nine major rights enjoyed by the farmers under PPVFRA and explained the importance of registration of plant varieties.
The Chief Guest and Director of the Institute, Dr M Madhu, in his address said that PPVFRA ensures the legitimate protection of farmers’ rights and encourages innovation. He praised the commendable contribution of farmers in the field of soil and water conservation.
Prof NP Todaria, former Dean and Head of Department, HNB Garhwal Central University, interacted with the farmers and gave information on PPVFRA in the field of Forestry and in the horticulture sector. Dr BS Negi, former Director, Horticulture and National Horticulture Mission, Uttarakhand, presented practical solutions to the problems related to the current horticulture crops. Dr M Shankar, In-charge, Research Farm, Selaqui, while giving a live demonstration of drone technology, informed that the use of drones in modern agriculture is proving to be very useful in spraying fertilisers and pesticides, monitoring crop health and reducing the cost of production.
The programme was conducted by Mudit Mishra (Technical Coordinator) and Abhishek Pundir. Dr Rajesh Kaushal (Principal Scientist), Dr Vibha Singhal (Principal Scientist), and other scientists and employees of the institute were present. Dr Anupam Barh, Scientist, expressed gratitude to all the guests and farmers and proposed the vote of thanks.
