PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun The Congress has claimed that it had effectively cornered the government on the issues of corruption, deteriorating law and order and a directionless budget during the Assembly budget session which was adjourned sine die during the early hours of Saturday. Addressing the media here on Sunday, the leader of opposition in the Assembly, Yashpal Arya said that the condition of the State administration is a cause for serious concern. He said that the government may claim zero-tolerance for corruption but in reality, complaints of corruption continue to emerge in recruitment, contracts, execution of schemes and transfer, among other aspects. In many cases, such complaints reached the chief minister and senior officials, but action was not taken in a time bound manner, which makes the public think that those indulging in corruption receive protection, he said. Referring to the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), he said that serious cases of financial irregularities have come to light in various schemes between 2018 and 2024. Serious questions have been raised at the financial mismanagement in the Dehradun Smart City project, the electricity system, mining and other departments, which raise concern regarding the financial condition of the State and its administrative work culture. “There has been a considerable rise in crimes after 2022. The number of murders in Dehradun within a short duration is alarming. A sense of insecurity among the State’s people is natural when criminals are moving about fearlessly in the capital. The government should also answer for the rising figure when it comes to gender crimes, cybercrime and other serious crimes,” Arya said. He opined that the budget passed is one that avoids facing real issues. It lacks any clear plan for strengthening economic resources or a concrete plan for employment generation. The rising debt on the State, thousands of vacant posts in government departments, migration, problems faced by farmers and challenges in rural areas were not given enough attention in the budget, he added.
