Gairsain, 13 Mar: One day after BJP MLA Shiv Arora had in the House demanded a legislation on population control in Uttarakhand after expressing concern over “rapid rise” of the population of the minorities and over ‘rapid demographic changes’ in the state, the reaction of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami came out today.
He also asserted that there is no shortage of LPG in the state at present.
It may be recalled that Arora had moved a proposal under Rule 300 in the House seeking the formulation of a population control law in the state. Following the proposal, Dhami today stated that the government could consider moving in this direction if circumstances so require and keeping in mind the sentiments of the people.
Dhami reminded that the state government has already implemented the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand and that positive results have begun to emerge after its implementation. He said that there are several issues in society which are closely linked with the sentiments of the people, and that the government respects the views and suggestions of all sections of society.
Dhami said that different sections of society have their own opinions and sentiments regarding a population control law as well. The government would study the suggestions and circumstances relating to the issue and, if the need is felt in the future, it may consider moving ahead in that direction.
He said the objective of the state government is to ensure balanced development in Uttarakhand. For this purpose, decisions are taken by keeping in mind social, economic and administrative aspects. Issues related to population would also be examined with the same broader perspective so that the interests of all sections of society are safeguarded.
Responding to the concerns being raised about the availability of cooking gas in the state, the CM clarified the situation and said that there is no shortage of gas in Uttarakhand. He said that there is no need for the public to panic and that clear instructions have already been issued to the officials in this regard.
The CM said that complaints of black marketing of gas cylinders do occasionally emerge from some places, but the government would not tolerate such practices under any circumstances. He added that the government is continuously monitoring the situation and the administration has been directed to remain alert to ensure that people in any part of the state do not face difficulties in accessing cooking gas.
Appealing to the public, Dhami said that people should not pay attention to rumours of any kind. If any problem is noticed anywhere, the administration should be informed immediately so that appropriate action can be taken in time. He said the government is making every effort to ensure that the supply of essential commodities in the state remains smooth and that the general public does not face any inconvenience.
