Dehradun, 16 Mar: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami handed over appointment letters to 63 sanitary inspectors selected for the Urban Development Department during an event held at his Camp Office here today. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also virtually laid the foundation stone for the new building of the Urban Development Directorate to be constructed at an estimated cost of about Rs 62 crores. During the programme, he also flagged off garbage disposal vehicles.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister reminded that nearly 30,000 youths have been provided government employment in the state over the past four years.
Extending his congratulations to all the sanitary inspectors selected through the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission, Dhami said that a new phase of responsibility is beginning in their lives. He noted that at the time of the formation of the state, there were only 63 urban local bodies in Uttarakhand. Today, the state has a total of 108 local urban bodies, including 11 municipal corporations, 46 municipal councils and 51 nagar panchayats. This, he said, is clear evidence that cities in the state have evolved into important centres of development and economic activity. The state government is continuously making efforts to make these cities clean, organised and modern, and in this direction the role of local bodies is extremely significant as they shoulder major responsibilities ranging from waste management to ensuring the smooth delivery of basic civic services.
The CM asserted that local bodies are the strongest pillars for the overall development of cities, while sanitary inspectors form the foundation of this system. The administrative and technical capacities of urban local bodies in the state are being strengthened continuously. Over the past five years, appointment letters have been issued to 63 Executive Officers, 22 Tax and Revenue Inspectors and 32 Junior Engineers in urban bodies. The appointment of 63 Sanitary Inspectors will further strengthen the functioning of these institutions. He expressed confidence that all the newly appointed inspectors would discharge their duties with dedication and integrity and contribute significantly towards maintaining cleanliness and order in cities across the state.
Dhami said that Uttarakhand is an important centre of faith, spirituality and tourism. The Char Dham shrines and the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna located in the state attract lakhs of pilgrims every year. The Kumbh Mela is scheduled to be organised in 2027, and that the Char Dham Yatra is set to commence next month. On such occasions it becomes extremely important to maintain cleanliness and proper civic arrangements in towns and pilgrimage centres, and urban local bodies play a crucial role in this regard. He said that the state government is taking several important steps to make cities modern and safe. While efforts are being made to strengthen solid waste management and sanitation systems in cities under the Swachh Bharat Mission, initiatives under programmes such as the Smart Cities Mission, Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, the Open Defecation Free campaign and legacy waste management projects are also being implemented to provide improved facilities to citizens.
The CM further said that Urban Health and Wellness Centres have been established to ensure accessible healthcare services in urban areas. An Ashray scheme is being implemented for the protection of stray cattle. For better waste management, modern mechanised transfer stations have been constructed and an Integrated Command and Control Centre has been established to monitor garbage collection vehicles. To promote environmental conservation, 30 electric buses are currently being operated in the city and EV charging stations have been set up at 11 locations. He added that the environmental workers making outstanding contributions to cleanliness and environmental protection are also being encouraged through the ‘Swachhata Sainani Samman’. The Chief Minister added that further efforts will be required for the state to improve its position in the national cleanliness rankings.
Among those present on the occasion were MLAs Khajan Das, Banshidhar Bhagat, Umesh Sharma Kau and Savita Kapoor, Secretary, Urban Development, Nitesh Jha, Director, Urban Development, Vinod Giri Goswami, Municipal Commissioner, Dehradun, Namami Bansal and other senior officials.
