Mussoorie, 31 May: The massive influx of tourists in recent days in Mussoorie has brought relief to those in the tourism industry; however, the continuously worsening traffic congestion has simultaneously become a major source of distress for, both, locals and visitors alike. Long queues of vehicles were observed during the morning hours along the Mussoorie-Dehradun route and at the city’s major intersections, today. In many areas, vehicles were seen inching along, while in others, people remained stranded in traffic jams for hours on end. Investigations revealed that the haphazard parking of vehicles along the roadside is emerging as the primary cause of these traffic jams. Ground reports indicate that a large number of people are parking their private vehicles directly along the roadsides. Furthermore, homestays, guesthouses, and hotels operating in Mussoorie are also directing their guests to park their vehicles on the streets. The presence of these parked vehicles on narrow roads is disrupting two-way traffic flow, causing the congestion situation to deteriorate steadily. Locals point out that this problem intensifies significantly during the peak tourist season; yet, despite this, no concrete measures regarding parking management appear to have been implemented. Traffic management also appeared to have collapsed in the vicinity of the Mussoorie petrol pump. Here, wholesale dealers of cement, gravel, soft drinks, and other commodities were utilising large trucks parked along the roadside for loading and unloading operations. During peak hours, the presence of these heavy vehicles on the road obstructs traffic movement and results in extensive jams. Local traders believe that this issue could be mitigated to a significant extent if specific time slots were designated for loading and unloading activities.
The role of the police in traffic management has also come under scrutiny, as no police personnel or traffic officials were visible at several major intersections across Mussoorie during the busy morning hours. In this context, the increasing number of vehicles and haphazard parking have further exacerbated the situation. Local residents assert that the deployment of additional police forces during the tourist season is essential to ensure smooth traffic flow and provide relief to the public. Many tourists visiting Mussoorie have expressed their frustration regarding the traffic congestion. Tourists arriving from Delhi noted that they had come to Mussoorie specifically to escape the scorching heat of the capital. While the weather here is extremely pleasant and enchanting, the traffic jams have ruined their entire travel experience.
One tourist remarked, “The journey from Delhi to Dehradun has become quite easy now, but reaching Mussoorie from Dehradun has turned into the most difficult part of the trip. It takes hours to cover a distance of just a few kilometres.” Tourists warn that, if the problem of traffic congestion is not brought under control soon, Mussoorie’s reputation as a tourist destination could suffer. Locals, traders, and tourists alike believe that, given the mounting traffic pressure in Mussoorie, the government and the administration must jointly formulate a long-term action plan. Such a plan could include measures such as developing alternative parking sites, strictly enforcing regulations against illegal roadside parking, designating specific time slots for the movement of heavy vehicles, and deploying additional traffic police personnel during the tourist season. Mussoorie is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. However, if the traffic management system is not rectified in a timely manner, this issue could pose a significant challenge to both the tourism industry and the local economy. In Mussoorie—renowned for its pleasant weather and natural beauty—the most pressing need currently felt is for improved traffic management and effective administrative coordination.
