Mining operations in the state’s rivers will continue until the onset of the monsoon. The administration has granted permission for mining activities until June 19. The Forest Corporation oversees mining operations in 13 of the state’s rivers. Typically, the river mining season here concludes on May 31. However, starting last year, a new arrangement was implemented allowing mining to continue right up until the arrival of the monsoon. To facilitate this, the Forest Corporation had written to the Meteorological Department, following which the department indicated that the monsoon is expected to arrive by June 19.
Nautapa is traditionally regarded as the nine hottest days of the year. The Nautapa period, which commenced on May 25, concluded on June 2. This time around, however, the scorching heat typically associated with Nautapa was conspicuously absent; instead, a spell of heavy rainfall and strong winds was witnessed across the state—stretching from remote Munsyari all the way to Haldwani, Pantnagar, and Dehradun.
Temperatures plummeted to levels ranging between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius below normal. While the plains experienced a welcome respite from the heat, residents in places such as Mukteshwar, Almora, and Champawat found themselves having to bring out their warm clothing.
