Dehradun, 24 Jan: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today inaugurated 8th Jyotish Mahakumbh organised by Amar Ujala at Graphic Era University in Dehradun. Speaking on the occasion, he underlined the scientific foundations of India’s ancient knowledge systems while outlining the state government’s efforts to position Uttarakhand as the country’s cultural and spiritual capital. During the event, the CM presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Purshottam Gaur and honoured several other eminent astrologers for their contributions to the field.
Commending the initiative, Dhami described the programme as a meaningful effort to bring the scientific principles embedded in ancient and divine knowledge to the common public. He said the insights emerging from such platforms can provide effective guidance in resolving human and social challenges while also contributing to a promising future for the nation. The CM observed that Sanatan culture represents a rare synthesis of knowledge, science and spirituality and is not based merely on faith or belief, but on a deep scientific outlook shaped by contemplation and research over centuries.
The Chief Minister said that astrology is among India’s most profound and scientifically developed disciplines and noted that ancient sages were not confined to ritualistic practices but were scientists of a very high order. He referred to Aryabhata for his pioneering contributions to astronomy and mathematics, Maharishi Parashar for giving astrology a structured and systematic scientific framework and Varahamihira, Bhrigu Muni and other scholars for strengthening traditions related to astronomy and time calculation.
Dhami said that principles governing celestial phenomena, which modern science today studies through large and complex instruments, were understood by Indian sages thousands of years ago through close observation of planetary motion and the nature of time.
He remarked that even institutions such as NASA have begun acknowledging that several geographical and astronomical phenomena can be better interpreted through Indian astrological science. He asserted that astrology establishes harmony between physical existence, spiritual awareness and the cosmic order, reflecting the deep interconnection between human life and the universe. He added that the sun, moon and planets are not merely celestial bodies but decisive forces shaping time cycles, natural balance and human behaviour.
The CM noted that astrology and Vastu Shastra are being studied extensively across the world and stressed that this sacred knowledge must be presented responsibly so that it serves public welfare. He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the renewed global interest in Sanatan culture and reminded that India’s ancient philosophy, knowledge and science are gaining recognition worldwide.
Pushkar Singh Dhami further stated that under the PM’s guidance, the state government is working continuously to establish Uttarakhand as a hub of culture and spirituality. He pointed out that a Centre for Hindu Studies has been set up at Doon University for in-depth research into Indian philosophy and history, and announced that one Spiritual Economic Zone each will be established in the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to promote Ayurveda, naturopathy, yoga and spiritual tourism. He also referred to the formation of the Uttarakhand Jyotish Parishad to promote astrological science in the state and help the younger generation understand and apply ancient Indian wisdom in their lives.
Among those present on the occasion included Parmarth Niketan’s Chidanand Saraswati, Graphic Era Group President Kamal Ghanshala, Amar Ujala Editor Anoop Bajpai and several noted astrologers from across the country.
