CM Dhami names the tunnel after Baba Boukhnag PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Uttarkashi Nearly 17 months after it hogged national and international limelight due to the workers trapped in a tunnel collapse for 17 days, the breakthrough was achieved in the construction of Silkyara tunnel on Wednesday. The breakthrough ceremony of the Silkyara tunnel was attended by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. It may be recalled that on November 12, 2023, 41 workers were trapped inside the tunnel and after a massive operation they were safely rescued after 17 days. Speaking on the occasion, the CM congratulated all engineers, technical experts and workers associated with the project. He said that this breakthrough is not just a success of advanced engineering but an example of faith and dedication. The CM said that the Silkyara tunnel rescue was one of the longest and most complex rescue missions in the world. Every individual involved in the mission demonstrated an extraordinary example of humanity and teamwork. It was a true test of technical and human resolve, and everyone came together to ensure its success, he said. The CM expressed gratitude to the rescue team, rat miners, NDRF, SDRF, and all cooperating agencies who played a crucial role in making the operation successful. He said the entire world was watching the Silkyara rescue. With the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the full support of the union government, the State government successfully conducted this extremely challenging operation in which experts and modern resources from across the country and the world were brought in. He appreciated the patience and courage shown by the trapped workers, which boosted everyone’s morale. The CM announced that the Silkyara tunnel will be named after Baba Boukhnag and the Baoukhnag Tibba will be developed as a tourist destination. The event was attended by Union Minister of State Ajay Tamta, MLAs Suresh Chauhan, Durgeshwar Lal, Sanjay Dobhal, NHIDCL MD Krishna Kumar, district magistrate Meherban Singh Bisht and Superintendent of Police Sarita Dobhal. The Project The breakthrough in the 4.5131 kilometre -long Silkyara tunnel project is a significant achievement considering its importance. Once completed the project will give an impetus to the Char Dham Yatra. The double-lane tunnel will be constructed at a total cost of approximately Rs 1384 crore. Upon completion, the tunnel will reduce the distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri Dhams by 25 kilometres. The project is expected to boost trade, tourism, and employment opportunities in the region, thereby strengthening the local economy.
