CM performs Govardhan Puja, calls for collective commitment to cow welfare

Dehradun, 22 Oct: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami performed Gau Mata worship at the cowshed situated within his official residence here, today, on the auspicious occasion of Govardhan Puja. On this occasion, he also prayed for the prosperity, well-being, and collective welfare of the people of Uttarakhand.
Speaking on the significance of the festival, Dhami observed that Govardhan Puja embodies the spirit of nature conservation and the deep bond between humans and animals. He emphasised that the occasion serves as a reminder to remain sensitive and committed to the country’s cultural traditions, environmental values, and its spiritual heritage.
Reminding those present about the revered status of the cow in Hindu belief, Dhami stated that Gau Mata holds the position of a mother and is inseparable from Sanatan culture and agrarian life. He noted that the act of serving and protecting cows not only upholds religious sentiments but also strengthens livelihoods and promotes self-reliance. Many families, he said, depend on cattle rearing and cow service for sustenance, making cow welfare a matter of both faith and economic resilience.
The CM appealed to citizens to unite in the service, protection, and conservation of cows. He asserted that the State Government is actively encouraging the establishment and operation of Gau Sadans to provide refuge for destitute cattle. In a significant policy announcement, Dhami declared that the daily maintenance allowance for such animals has been raised from Rs 5 to Rs 80 per animal per day. Furthermore, he stated that a 60 per cent subsidy has been provisioned for private persons and the organisations undertaking the construction of cow shelters.
Dhami shared that approximately 54 Gau Sadans are presently under construction across the state. Reaffirming the Government’s commitment, he assured that efforts towards cow protection and welfare would continue with renewed vigour in the days to come.
