Cong calls ‘attack’ on Kichha MLA ‘murder of democracy’, warns of statewide stir

Dehradun, 23 Sep: Congress has launched a sharp attack on the state government after the Congress MLA Kichha in Udham Singh Nagar was allegedly assaulted by a former BJP lMLA and his associates. Party spokesperson Dr Pratima Singh described the incident as a cowardly and murderous assault, calling it the darkest chapter in Uttarakhand’s political history and a brazen killing of democracy. She accused the BJP of being intoxicated with power and said its leaders had resorted to open hooliganism to silence the opposition.
In a strongly worded statement, Singh said the attack was not only on the Congress MLA but also on the faith of the people of Kichha and the sanctity of the Constitution. She alleged that law and order in the state was on a ventilator and jungle raj had reached its peak, with police reduced to mute spectators while BJP leaders flouted the law. She demanded immediate registration of cases under attempt to murder against the former BJP MLA, his associates and supporters, and their arrest without delay.
Singh warned that if the accused are not arrested within 24 hours, Congress workers would launch a statewide chakka jam and the responsibility for the consequences would rest entirely with the government. She said the incident exposed the hypocrisy of the chief minister’s claims of zero tolerance, as BJP leaders were openly indulging in violence under the nose of the administration. She added that when elected representatives themselves were unsafe, the security of ordinary citizens was left to fate, and demanded adequate protection for opposition legislators.
Declaring that Congress would not bow before such cowardly acts, Singh said that the party would take to the streets if justice is denied. She asserted that the entire Congress organisation would mobilise against what she termed a dictatorial government, and that the people’s anger would be channelled into a mass movement to hold the ruling dispensation accountable.
