Haldwani, 5 Sep: Congress has stepped up its protest against the FIR registered against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Rajya Sabha member and senior Congress leader, Chandrakant Handore today reached the SSP office here along with party workers and met the investigating officer, CO Amit Saini. A memorandum was submitted demanding withdrawal of the case against Rahul Gandhi and action against those responsible for the alleged purification of the Ramleela ground. Handore warned that if the demands are not met, a larger agitation would follow.
Congress leaders alleged that the FIR against Rahul Gandhi has been filed under political pressure and insisted that such action against an opposition leader exercising democratic rights was unjustified. They also called for an impartial investigation into the entire matter. Handore raised questions over the alleged purification of a public venue after a political rally, stating that those involved should also face action.
The party maintained that such activities disturb the social and political atmosphere. Haldwani MLA Sumit Hridayesh and a large number of Congress workers were present during the protest. The leaders declared that unless the FIR against Rahul Gandhi is withdrawn and those responsible for the purification are punished, the agitation will be intensified. Handore made it clear that the Congress will not retreat from this issue and, if necessary, will launch a major movement.
