Dehradun, 2 Feb: A brutal daylight murder triggered panic and outrage in Dehradun today when a young woman was killed by a man obsessed with her in the crowded Paltan and Machhi Bazaar area. The accused was arrested by the police shortly after the incident. Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, police also arrested the accused involved in the killing of a woman in Rishikesh earlier this week.According to information received, at around 10.30 a.m., Gunjan, a resident of Govindgarh, had gone to the market for personal work. As she reached near Doolha Bazaar in the Machhi Bazaar area, she was followed by Akash Kumar, son of Komal Ram and a resident of Mannuganj, Khudbuda Mohalla, Kotwali Nagar. Akash was reportedly carrying a sharp-edged weapon. Sensing danger, the frightened woman ran into a narrow lane in an attempt to escape. The accused chased her, stopped her inside the lane and attacked her repeatedly with the weapon, inflicting multiple blows on her neck and hands. He then fled the spot calmly, leaving her critically injured and bleeding on the road. The incident, which took place in broad daylight, caused shockwaves across the entire market area. Shops were hurriedly shut and a large crowd gathered at the scene. By the time the Kotwali police reached the spot and rushed the injured woman to Doon Hospital, she had succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead by doctors. The police took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination. The local residents informed the police that the deceased woman worked at a dentist’s clinic on Tilak Road. They alleged that the accused was in one-sided infatuation with her and that disputes had occurred earlier between the two sides over the issue. Despite repeated objections, the accused had allegedly continued to harass her, ultimately leading to the fatal attack. The residents also said that the woman was unmarried, while the accused was married and has a two-year-old child. Police arrested Akash Kumar along with the murder weapon at a short distance from the crime scene and initiated further legal proceedings. The brutal killing led to strong public anger, with residents questioning how the accused managed to flee immediately after committing such a heinous crime in a crowded area. Many locals expressed regret that had people shown even minimal courage at the time, the woman’s life might have been saved. Angry residents and passersby reportedly reprimanded nearby shopkeepers, accusing them of remaining silent spectators during the incident. In protest against the murder, traders shut down Paltan Bazaar and Machhi Bazaar to express their outrage. The closure caused inconvenience to shoppers who had come from surrounding areas. Following the incident, the police media cell of the Senior Superintendent of Police issued a press note on February 2, 2026, stating that some individuals are circulating photographs and videos related to the deceased woman on social media. The family members of the victim and respected residents and office-bearers of the traders’ associations have objected to this and appealed to the police to take legal action against those responsible. The police appealed to the general public not to circulate or forward any photographs or videos related to the incident, warning that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found deliberately hurting sentiments or disturbing law and order by sharing such content. It has also been reported that the woman had lodged a complaint with police a couple of days ago regarding danger from the assailant but no action was taken.Meanwhile, in another significant development, police also made a breakthrough in the murder case of a woman in Rishikesh. On the night of 31 January, in the Kotwali Rishikesh area, a woman identified as Preeti, who was residing in a rented accommodation at Shivaji Nagar, Gali No. 11, was shot dead. Acting swiftly, the police arrested the accused, Suresh Gupta, son of late Lalamal Gupta, a resident of village Dargahpur under Laksar police station in Haridwar district, presently residing in Awas Vikas Colony under Rishikesh police station, aged 40 years. He was apprehended from Chhutmalpur in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh stated that the accused involved in both the killings in Dehradun and Rishikesh have been arrested and further investigation in both cases is underway.
