The new law aims to prohibit land purchase by outsiders in 11 mountainous districts my uttarakhand news | DEHRADUN In a landmark decision, the Uttarakhand cabinet approved the much- awaited stringent land laws in the State on Wednesday. The new law prohibits the people of other States from purchasing land for agricultural and horticulture purposes in 11 mountainous districts (barring Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar) of Uttarakhand. It is learnt that in the meeting of the State cabinet held at the Vidhan Sabha auditorium on Wednesday, the cabinet gave its approval to the proposed Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act-1950) amendment bill-2025. The new law will ensure land consolidation in the mountainous areas of the State and limit the rights of district magistrates in the sale and purchase of the land.  It is further learnt that the new bill will repeal all the amendments in the land laws incorporated after the year 2018.  After the decision the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on X that the BJP government is protector of culture and original fabric of the State. He said that by approving the stringent land laws the State cabinet has shown its respect to the long standing demand of the people and public sentiments. The historic decision will help in protecting the culture, tradition and resources of the State and preserving the original identity of Uttarakhand.   The Parliamentary Affairs minister Premchand Agarwal expressed gratitude to CM Dhami for respecting the sentiments of people on stringent land laws.  It is pertinent to mention here that the demand of a stringent land law was gathering momentum in the State for quite some time. Following agitation in different parts of the State the State government had set up a committee headed by former chief secretary Subhash Kumar. The committee had submitted its report in September 2022 which had recommended Himachal Pradesh like land laws in Uttarakhand.
