Dehradun, 3 Dec: District Magistrate Savin Bansal today conducted a surprise inspection of the Government Nari Niketan, Balika Niketan, Bal Grih and Shishu Sadan located in Kedarpuram and reviewed the arrangements in detail. He first inspected the premises and examined the facilities related to accommodation, security, food, health services, cleanliness and sanitation. He interacted directly with the women, girls, children and officials residing in the institutions and took note of their needs and concerns.
The DM directed the officers to ensure regular monitoring so that all the residents receive a safe, clean and supportive environment. Considering the rising cold, he distributed sweaters, caps and sweets to the women, girls and infants. At present, 173 destitute, abandoned and exploited women live at the Kedarpuram Nari Niketan, while Balika Niketan houses 19 girls and Bal Grih and Shishu Sadan accommodate 23 children who are being provided social security, shelter and other essential facilities.
Bansal stated that Nari Niketan, Balika Niketan, Bal Grih and Shishu Sadan are important institutions that shelter destitute, abandoned and traumatised women and children who require continuous care and counselling for rehabilitation into the mainstream. He said infrastructure, sewer lines, dormitories and other requirements are being upgraded through the district plan and mining fund, while regular health check-ups and balanced diets are being ensured. He added that the dormitory building approved during a previous inspection is now nearing completion and will be formally handed over within two months.
The DM instructed that sports activities be promoted for the overall development of girls at Balika Niketan and directed the construction of a proper playground designed for kho-kho, kabaddi, badminton and yoga. He also ordered the installation of oil heaters in all rooms of Shishu Niketan. To strengthen security at Nari Niketan, the DM ordered immediate deployment of two additional women home guards. He further directed the Chief Medical Officer to appoint two additional nurses and ensure regular visits of the designated doctor. He stressed the need for systematic health examinations, nutrition assessments and timely treatment of the girls and infants. He instructed the RBSK team to visit regularly, conduct complete health screening and ensure prompt treatment and referrals. The DM also approved 11 mobile phones and SIM cards on the spot to facilitate Aadhaar enrolment for the women and children.
During the inspection, he reviewed ongoing construction works and directed the Rural Construction Department to expedite the building of the additional block, emphasising that unnecessary delays would not be tolerated as improving facilities for women, girls and infants is a priority. Various repair and construction works are underway with respect to these shelters.
Chief Development Officer (CDO) Abhinav Shah, SDM Sadar Harigir, District Probation Officer Meena Bisht, Assistant Director Information Badri Chand, ACMO Dr Vandana Semwal, Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Namita Mamgai and officers of the Rural Construction and Drinking Water Departments were present.
