my uttarakhand news BureauDehradun, 4 Feb: The Road Safety Month Awareness Programme at AIIMS Kalyani, West Bengal, was inaugurated by Prof Dr YK Gupta, President, AIIMS Kalyani, in the presence of invited guest, Padma Shri awardee Prof Dr BKS Sanjay, President, AIIMS Guwahati, along with Prof Dr Arvind Sinha, Director, AIIMS Kalyani, Ashish Maurya, SP, Ranaghat Police District, and other dignitaries.
During the programme, Dr Sanjay delivered a lecture on road safety. He highlighted that nearly 90% of road traffic accidents occur due to driver negligence, and stressed that reckless driving is primarily a behavioural issue. He emphasised that behaviour can be modified at any stage of life, and that such programmes are aimed at bringing a positive transformation in the mindset of young people.
Prof Sanjay also pointed out that although India has thousands of educational institutions, including several Institutes of National Importance, the country still lacks an adequate number of formal driving schools. He underlined that driving is an essential life skill and should be imparted to all youth, as education, employment, business, and even recreation are difficult to pursue without safe driving or riding skills.
He further stated that road traffic accidents represent a major public health challenge, and appealed to policymakers that institutions like AIIMS can serve as nodal agencies in their respective regions to spread awareness and promote road safety across the nation.
The orthopaedic surgeon reiterated the importance of responsible road behaviour, strict adherence to traffic rules, and safe driving practices to prevent accidents and save lives.
He concluded with a powerful message: “Driving is a skill, safety is a habit—together, they save lives. Let us master both.”
To carry the message beyond the auditorium, a cycle rally was organised by more than 500 students.
