Dehradun, 28 Jan: The National Glaucoma Winter Surgical Carnival 2026 opened on 24 January at Welcomhotel by ITC, Madhuban, Dehradun, setting a powerful tone for advanced glaucoma learning with a strong focus on hands-on skills, real-world surgery, and innovation that directly impacts patient care.
Organised by Drishti Eye Institute, the opening day drew leading glaucoma specialists from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Vellore, Indore, Trichy, Chandigarh, and other major centres, along with international participation. The conference leadership included Dr Amardeep Kaur (Organising Secretary), Dr Shivam Gupta (Co-Secretary), Dr Saurabh Luthra (Chairman, Scientific Committee), and Dr Gaurav Luthra (Organising Chairman).
Day one stood out for its clear emphasis on skill-based glaucoma training. Young ophthalmologists actively engaged in MIGS-focused wet labs, where they were trained in practical gonioscopy and I-STENT techniques, translating theory into surgical confidence. Structured masterclasses and deferred live surgery discussions delivered step-by-step decision-making for everyday glaucoma challenges.
The academic strength of the programme was reinforced by eminent faculty including Dr Davinder S Grover (USA), Dr Brig Sanjay Mishra, Dr Suneeta Dubey, Dr Sushma Tejwani, Dr Amit Porwal, Dr Devendra Maheshwari and several other glaucoma pioneers from all over the country who shared contemporary strategies spanning medical, laser, and surgical glaucoma management—offering insights that delegates could immediately take back to their clinics.
A defining moment of the evening was the Inauguration and the Dr MC Luthra Oration. Dr Saurabh Luthra paid tribute to the legacy of Dr MC Luthra, whose vision laid the foundation for advanced eye care in the region. Dr Gaurav Luthra formally welcomed and introduced the orator, Dr Davinder S Grover, a global leader in interventional glaucoma, who delivered the Dr MC Luthra Oration on surgical innovation and evolving glaucoma care.
With glaucoma remaining a leading cause of irreversible blindness, the opening day of the National Glaucoma Winter Surgical Carnival 2026 reaffirmed a clear message: better skills lead to better vision outcomes. The first day successfully blended training, inspiration, and clinical relevance, making it a meaningful learning experience for both young and experienced ophthalmologists.
