Dehradun, 10 Feb: In a proud achievement for Indian ophthalmology, Dr Shivam from Drishti Eye Institute has been awarded the highly prestigious APAO Young Ophthalmologists (YO) Travel Grant, a global honour granted to only five young ophthalmologists worldwide. The award is considered extremely rare, especially for candidates from India.
The grant enabled him to present his work at the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) 2026 Congress in Hong Kong, one of the most prestigious ophthalmic conferences in the region, which witnessed participation from over 11,000 delegates across 111 countries. At the international forum, he presented an outstanding academic portfolio, including two free papers, three posters, one e-poster, and one surgical video, highlighting his contributions to the field.
During the congress, he also interacted with and learned from leading pioneers in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) across the Asia-Pacific region, gaining valuable insights into the latest techniques and advancements.
As part of the travel grant, recipients receive US$1,000 in funding for international travel, complimentary registration for the APAO 2026 Congress, and an invitation to the official Congress Cultural Party, making it one of the most sought-after recognitions for young ophthalmologists worldwide.
The event also featured Dr Gaurav Luthra, Head of Drishti Eye Institute, as guest faculty, where he shared his expertise on ICL, laser cataract surgeries, and other refractive surgeries, offering valuable insights to the attendees.
This achievement highlights the strong academic environment and research-driven approach at Drishti Eye Institute, where young surgeons are encouraged to present their work on global platforms. At the institute, Dr Shivam serves as a Glaucoma Surgeon, contributing to both patient care and academic excellence.
