Dehradun, 6 Jan: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in a programme organised in Mukhya Sevak Sadan at his camp office here, today, to mark the 79th Foundation Day of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Addressing the gathering on this occasion, the Chief Minister stated that, over the past eight decades, BIS has carried out remarkable work in the fields of quality, reliability, and consumer protection, successfully realising the mantra of ‘Quality is Identity’.
Dhami noted that this journey, which began in 1947 as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), has now established itself as a strong cornerstone of the country’s industrial, scientific, and economic progress. Through standardisation, certification, and quality testing, BIS has not only made industries globally competitive but has also strengthened trust and safety in the lives of consumers. He observed that standardisation is no longer confined to the industrial sector but has expanded to agriculture, health, road safety, energy, water conservation, disaster management, and digital services. He credited BIS for playing a crucial role in shaping the future by setting timely standards in areas such as digital security, medical devices, drones, electric vehicles, recycled materials, and green energy.
Dhami also asserted that BIS is making a commendable contribution towards balancing ecology and economy in line with sustainable development goals. In the state, BIS is carrying out awareness and collaborative efforts regarding standardisation in coordination with departments including the Public Works Department, Disaster Management, MDDA, and UPCL. He stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, campaigns like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India have become pillars of the nation’s economic and technical advancement. He emphasised the Prime Minister’s vision that Indian products should become global benchmarks for quality, a goal in which BIS plays a vital role.
The CM mentioned that the State Government is also working towards establishing high-quality standards for local handicrafts, organic agricultural products, medicinal herbs, and local food items. He noted that the ‘House of Himalayas’ brand was created to give global recognition to the state’s traditional products. He stressed that quality must become a habit rather than just a standard so that a quality-based culture can evolve into a mass movement. He expressed confidence that under the ‘One Nation, One Standard’ policy, BIS will keep India at the forefront of global competition and continue to play a significant role in the resolve to make India a developed nation by 2047.
Regarding state initiatives, the CM shared that the government has taken several historic steps to strengthen scientific thinking and technical innovation. The state has implemented the Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy 2025 for the first time. Approximately 180 labs based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have been established across 95 blocks in all 13 districts. A Science and Technology Premier League has been launched in all districts, benefiting hundreds of students, and a “Lab-on-Wheels” is operational in every district. Furthermore, 60 Patent Information Centres have been set up in various universities and centres. To foster science-based development in remote areas, the “Frontier Area Development Council” has been formed. Science festivals have been extended to hilly districts, with this year’s event held in Rudraprayag. Budgets have been allocated for setting up Science, Technology, and Innovation Centres in every district, and science-based broadcasts will soon commence.
Dhami added that the construction of the country’s fifth Science City in Dehradun has gained significant momentum. This project is taking shape at a cost of Rs 175 crores with the joint cooperation of the Government of India and the State Government. The establishment of Women’s Technology Centres has also begun. He noted that dialogue regarding science and innovation with central institutions has been revitalised. The science and technology-based rescue model adopted during the Silkyara operation has received international recognition, and a World Disaster Management Conference based on this model is being organised. Today, every corner of the state is connected through science and technology.
Among those present on the occasion were MLAs Khajan Das, Umesh Sharma Kau and Savita Kapoor, Director, BIS, Saurabh Tiwari, Director General, UCOST, Prof Durgesh Pant, Brig KG Behl (Retd) and representatives from various industry and trade associations.
