Dehradun, 29 Dec: The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President, Ganesh Godiyal, has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Angel Chakma and his brother Michael in Dehradun. Godiyal has calling the incident a glaring reflection of the state’s deteriorating law and order situation. He asserted that the system has collapsed and that the criminals are becoming increasingly emboldened, raising serious questions about the safety of ordinary citizens when even the capital city is no longer secure.
Godiyal expressed grave concern over the fact that the victim’s complaint was registered three days after the incident, terming it a clear case of negligence by the state government and police administration. He argued that such delays weaken the judicial process and amount to injustice towards the victims. He emphasised that the character of Uttarakhand has never been defined by such violence, as the state has always upheld the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. He added that such incidents are not only unfortunate but also cast doubts on the social unity of the state.
The PCC Chief stressed that it needs to be investigated whether the attack was motivated by racial discrimination or there were other underlying factors. He also urged the government and the police to conduct an impartial and thorough inquiry to uncover the truth. According to him, the delayed registration of the First Information Report (FIR) in such a heinous crime is a serious matter for which both the government and police must be held accountable. He remarked that while it is the government’s duty to prevent such occurrences, the people of Uttarakhand are known for their large-heartedness and no one should be forced to live in fear.
The Pradesh Congress President further alleged that the BJP government is deliberately allowing the collapse of law and order and has failed completely in controlling crime. He demanded immediate and stringent action against the culprits to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.
Godiyal also referred to a statement issued by former National President of the Congress and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on social media, in which Gandhi described the attack on Angel Chakma and Michael as a horrific hate crime. Gandhi observed that such hatred is not born overnight but has been nurtured over years. Extending his condolences to the Chakma family and the people of Tripura and the North-East, the Leader of the Opposition affirmed that the nation is proud to have them as Indian brothers and sisters.
