Dehradun, 16 Jan: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) chaired a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Nainital Golf Club at the Lok Bhawan, here, today.
During the meeting, he approved the proposal to rename Raj Bhavan Golf Club as Lok Bhawan Golf Club, in accordance with society registration norms. The Governor directed that the formal process for the name change be completed at the earliest.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the maintenance of the golf course, upgradation of facilities, and various measures to further improve it. The Governor emphasised the need for sustainable maintenance, quality enhancement, and development in line with modern requirements.
The Governor also conducted a detailed review of the proposed Governors Cup Golf Tournament–2026, scheduled to be held in the last week of May. He said that lessons learned from previous years should be used to make the tournament more organised, attractive, and of a higher standard. He directed that coordination be established with other prestigious golf clubs across the country and that best practices be adopted.
Emphasising that golf should not remain limited to a select group, the Governor stressed the need to connect the sport with the general public and ensure wider participation. He directed that students of government schools be provided training in golf and encouraged to take up the sport. He also emphasised making necessary arrangements to involve children and youth from economically weaker sections.
Highlighting the importance of increasing participation of youth, especially girls, in golf, the Governor said that sports are not only a means of physical and mental development but also help inculcate discipline, leadership, and self-confidence. He directed that Lok Bhawan Golf Club be developed as a model centre of inclusive sports culture, ensuring benefits for all sections of society.
On this occasion, Secretary to the Governor and Vice Chairman, Raj Bhavan Golf Club Nainital, Ravinath Raman, Aide-de-Camp to the Governor and Secretary, Raj Bhavan Golf Club, Amit Srivastava, Golf Captain Colonel Vivek Bhatt, Financial Controller to the Governor Dr Tripti Srivastava, Member Dr Sachin Chamoli, and Comptroller Pramod Chamoli were among those present.
