Former chief secretary Singh, Dangwal and Gaur were also the members of the five- member expert committee set up by the State government on UCC. The governor of Uttarakhand lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh has given his approval for setting up the committee headed by former the CS. The committee will prepare the draft of different regulations related with the UCC bill. The draft will include different procedures and provisions for easy implementation of the UCC. The constitution of the committee highlights the resolve of the Pushkar Singh Dhami government on UCC. It will be recalled that Uttarakhand created history when the UCC bill was passed by the Vidhan Sabha on February 7. The UCC bill mandates similar laws of marriage, divorce, maintenance and succession in all the religions and communities in the State. While the scheduled tribes have been kept out of purview of the bill, the UCC endeavours to reform social evils such as child marriage, polygamy and Talaq. The UCC will make the registration of marriage compulsory and bans second marriage of individuals in case of either husband or wife being alive. The UCC makes no discrimination between legitimate and illegitimate children. Registration of live-in relationships has been made mandatory in the UCC and children born out of such relationships will have all the rights accorded to children born from a marriage.
