Tuesday, 06 February 2024 | my uttarakhand news | DEHRADUN History is set to be created in the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday with the tabling of the bill on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Pushkar Singh Dhami government. After the passage of the bill and its subsequent approval by the governor, Uttarakhand will become the first State in the country after Goa to have its own UCC. The government wants the opposition to participate in the discussion on the UCC in the house. Interacting with the media-persons at Vidhan Sabha on Monday the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the assembly session has been convened specially for the UCC. He said that the people of Uttarakhand have been waiting for a long time for the UCC. “The entire country is looking at us at the moment. It is a historic occasion. We will table the UCC bill and discussions will be held in the assembly on the UCC and its provisions,’’ he said. The CM appealed to the opposition members to participate in the discussion on the UCC with a positive approach and mind. He said that the UCC will empower women and will be good for every citizen. The CM said that the BJP had made a promise to the people of the state before the assembly election of 2022 that it will bring UCC in the State and the people have given a mandate to the party on the issue. He said that we are happy that Uttarakhand has got the privilege to take a lead on UCC. The UCC bill which will be tabled in the Assembly is likely to be based on the recommendation of the five member committee headed by justice (retd) Rajana Prakash Desai. The committee submitted its comprehensive report to the chief minister Dhami on February 2. The speaker Ritu Khanduri confirmed that the bill on UCC will be presented in the assembly on Tuesday. She said that the issue came up for discussion during the meeting of the business advisory committee held on Monday.
