Mussoorie, 9 Jan: Following the verdict of the Uttarakhand High Court, local residents celebrated with great enthusiasm at the main entrance of Mussoorie’s world-famous George Everest Estate. Happy with the court’s decision to ban toll collection on the public road and illegal fees at the entrance gate, people distributed sweets to each other to celebrate their victory. Local citizens said that the private company operating the George Everest Estate had been harassing local people for a long time. In the name of tourism, the company had adopted a dictatorial attitude and started illegally collecting entry fees not only from tourists but also from local residents, even though the road leading to George Everest is a completely public road.Local residents said that they had united and filed a public interest litigation in the High Court against the company’s arbitrary actions and illegal collection of fees. Understanding the seriousness of the matter, the court delivered a major verdict in the public interest and banned both the collection of fees at the entry gate and on the public road.A wave of happiness has swept through the area after the High Court’s order. People say that this decision is not limited to George Everest alone, but it sends a message that the violation of the rights of the common people in the name of tourism development will not be tolerated. On this occasion, Bhagat Singh Kathait, Jagpal Gusain, Student Union President Pravesh Rana, Prakash Rana, Shoaib, and many other local people were present. Everyone described the High Court’s decision as a victory for public unity and democracy. Local citizens said that this struggle will continue so that in the future no private company can seize public resources and harass the common people
