Dehradun, 9 Dec: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today participated in a programme at his official residence, where he handed over appointment letters to 142 Assistant Professors selected through the Medical Service Selection Board for Government Medical Colleges in the state. Congratulating the newly appointed faculty members on this occasion, Dhami observed the appointment of so many faculty members in the medical colleges marks a significant step towards strengthening the medical sector. The CM urged the newly appointed medical faculty members to impart quality education and training to their students while instilling values of sensitivity, empathy, and service, so that they emerge not only as skilled and efficient doctors but also as responsible citizens committed to humanity with integrity.
Dhami emphasised that under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the State Government is consistently working to expand and strengthen health services in Uttarakhand. He noted that quality medical facilities are being made available to citizens at affordable rates. He reminded that, under the Ayushman Yojana, nearly 61 lakh Ayushman cards have been distributed, enabling cashless treatment worth over Rs 3,300 crores for more than 17 lakh patients in the state.
Dhami further stated that the Government is establishing a medical college in every district to ensure that people in remote areas can access modern health facilities locally. He reminded that five medical colleges are already operational, while construction of two more is underway. Super Speciality Departments have been set up in the Medical Colleges of Dehradun, Haldwani, and Srinagar. He also mentioned that construction of the state’s first modern Cancer Institute in Haldwani is progressing. He also noted that Heli-Ambulances are proving to be life-savers in emergencies in remote regions. Patients are being provided free pathological tests, and Telemedicine services are being utilised to connect specialist doctors with villages in distant areas.
Addressing the issue of staff shortages in Government hospitals and Medical Colleges, Dhami confirmed that appointments are being expedited. While 142 Assistant Professors received appointment letters today, the process for appointing 356 more is underway. In addition, 1,248 Nursing Officers and 170 Technicians have already been appointed, and the selection process for around 600 more Nursing Officers is in progress.
The CM also recalled that recruitment in the past was plagued by favouritism, malpractice, and corruption. To counter this, the Government introduced the country’s strictest Anti-Copying Law. He asserted that all recruitment processes are now conducted strictly on merit, allowing deserving candidates to benefit from their skills and hard work. So far, approximately 27,000 youths have secured Government jobs, and Dhami assured that all vacant posts will be filled through the commission at the earliest.
Cabinet Minister Dhan Singh Rawat added that Government Medical Colleges currently have 62 per cent permanent faculty, a figure which is soon expected to rise further. He said that 70 per cent of the construction work on Pithoragarh and Rudrapur Medical Colleges has been completed, and both institutions will begin operations from the next academic session. At present, 625 students are pursuing MBBS and 256 are enrolled in Post Graduate courses in the state’s Government Medical Colleges. Around 14,000 students are pursuing Nursing studies annually across nearly 100 colleges in Uttarakhand. Rawat also shared that all the 3,000 recently appointed nursing staff belong to Uttarakhand. He added that 32 lakh people have availed free tests, while 350 patients have been referred to higher centres through air ambulance services.
MLA Savita Kapoor, MLA Khajan Das, Secretary Dr R Rajesh Kumar, Director Medical Education Dr Ajay Arya, and Principals of Medical Colleges were also present at the programme.
