Haridwar, 4 Feb: Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) on Wednesday participated as the Chief Guest in the “Bicentenary Celebration of Hindi Journalism” organised by the Press Club, Haridwar. On this occasion, he shared his views on the historical, social and democratic contributions of Hindi journalism.
The Governor said that the continuous and active journey of Hindi journalism for 200 years is a symbol of its depth, commitment and dedication. He described the journey of Hindi journalism, which began with the publication of Udant Martand, as a medium for awakening national consciousness. He said that Hindi is not merely a language of communication, but an expression of India’s emotions, culture and soul.

He stated that Hindi journalism questions authority with truth, wisdom and values while keeping public interest at the centre, which represents the true spirit of democracy. He added that independence was not merely a transfer of power, but a resolve for the renaissance of civilisation and the creation of a new India. Hindi journalism has played a highly significant role in carrying forward this resolve.Lt Gen Singh noted that, in today’s digital age, the nature of media is changing rapidly, but the core duty of journalism must remain unchanged. He said that Hindi journalism is not limited to reporting events alone; rather, it has been the voice of the marginalised sections of society, a carrier of women’s dignity, and a pioneer of social reform.Referring to the spiritual land of Haridwar, the Governor said that the city is not only a pilgrimage centre but also a hub of India’s consciousness. Mentioning that crores of tourists visited Haridwar in the year 2025, he said it is the responsibility of journalists to convey positive messages of nation-building to millions of people through their writings. He also urged the media to take the lead in creating public awareness regarding cleanliness in the city. The Governor appealed to journalists to accept their responsibility towards public interest, democratic values and national reconstruction as a solemn commitment, and to play their role in making India a developed, self-reliant nation and a global leader by 2047.As the keynote speaker, Nirmal Pathak expressed his views on the topic, “Hindi Journalism in Nation’s Reconstruction after Independence”.
