Dehradun, 19 Nov: The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee today paid tribute to the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the occasion of her 108th birth anniversary at a function organised at the Congress Bhawan here.
Newly appointed State Congress President Ganesh Godiyal led the event and, along with a large gathering of party workers, offered floral tributes before a portrait of the late leader.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Ganesh Godiyal described Indira Gandhi as a towering figure in national and global politics, whose life embodied sacrifice, dedication, and the spirit of womanhood. He emphasised that her unwavering commitment to the unity of the nation and her decisive leadership placed India firmly on the path of progress. Godiyal recalled her pioneering initiatives such as the nationalisation of banks and the Twenty Point Programme aimed at poverty alleviation, noting that these measures were instrumental in fostering social harmony and inclusive development.
Godiyal asserted that Indira Gandhi’s legacy extended far beyond national borders, as she brought global attention to India and compelled adversaries to recognise the country’s sovereignty. He added that her strategic leadership during the Bangladesh Liberation War, culminating in the defeat of the Pakistani Army and the birth of an independent Bangladesh, was hailed as a historic triumph that reshaped the geopolitical landscape of South Asia.
Godiyal asserted that the nation would always cherish the memory of the woman who altered the map of the world through her resolute actions and lifelong service. Her supreme sacrifice for the defence of India’s unity and integrity, he said, commands boundless respect and admiration.
Reminding the party leaders of Indira Gandhi’s early involvement in the freedom movement, Godiyal recounted how she founded the Bal Charkha Sangh and formed the Vanar Sena in 1930 to support the Congress Party during the Non-Cooperation Movement. The PCC Chief also cited her imprisonment in 1942 and her humanitarian work in riot-affected areas of Delhi in 1947 under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi as examples of her enduring commitment to the nation.
Godiyal asserted that, from her formative years to her final moments, Indira Gandhi remained steadfast in her patriotic fervour and dedication to public service. He added that, whether it was ensuring political stability, implementing economic reforms, or asserting India’s stature on the global stage, Gandhi confronted every challenge with courage and foresight. While some of her decisions sparked controversy, her actions were always guided by the national interest, he conceded.
Godiyal further mentioned that at the time of Independence, India lacked even basic manufacturing capabilities, yet under Indira Gandhi’s leadership, the country conducted its first nuclear test at Pokhran, thereby joining the ranks of nuclear-capable nations. Godiyal reiterated the Congress Party’s enduring commitment to communal harmony and brotherhood, cautioning against disruptive forces that seek to undermine the nation’s hard-won freedom. He urged that such elements be confronted with determination and unity.
Among those present at the tribute ceremony were State Vice Presidents Suryakant Dhasmana and Puran Singh Rawat, Pradesh General Secretaries Rajendra Shah and Rajendra Bhandari, State Treasurer Aryendra Sharma, Mahanagar President Jaswinder Singh Gogi, former Mahanagar President Lal Chand Sharma, Pradesh Spokespersons Pratima Singh, Sujata Paul, and Rajesh Chamoli, along with Jagdish Dhiman, Acharya Nareshanand Nautiyal, Arjun Sonkar, Vinod Chauhan, Manish Nagpal, Dinesh Singh, Gul Muhammad, Savitri Thapa and Lalit Thadri.
