Dehradun, 2 Mar: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Special Monitor Kanahiya Tripathi today visited various educational institutions in Dehradun and interacted with students to sensitise them about human rights and the importance of being aware of their rights and duties.
During his visit, Tripathi held detailed interactions with students at GGIC Kaulagarh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Hostel, Government Upper Primary School Prempur Mafi and Doon Medical College. Addressing the students on this occasion, Tripathi emphasised that, along with academic learning, awareness of human rights is of utmost importance. He particularly underlined the need for girl students to be fully aware of their rights and the legal protections available to them. He provided guidance on provisions of the POCSO Act, issues related to hygiene and sanitation, and various self-defence initiatives aimed at empowering young women.
At the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Hostel, Tripathi instructed the authorities to organise special awareness programmes on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8 March and World Environment Day on 5 June this year. He also suggested that seminars, competitions and documentary film screenings be conducted to promote awareness and encourage greater participation of students in issues concerning gender equality and environmental protection.
Later, at Doon Medical College, Tripathi convened a meeting with the college authorities and senior doctors. Expressing satisfaction over the institutional arrangements, he stated that commendable efforts were being made to promote human rights and gender equality within the campus. He stressed that medical education requires better and more structured dialogue among students, faculty members and medical practitioners to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. He further noted that no complaints were currently pending at the college and that the management committee had assured full and effective compliance with all directions issued in this regard.
During the visit, Chief Education Officer VK Dhauriyal, District Social Welfare Officer Deepankar Ghildiyal and other senior officials were also present.
