PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun  A man was shot dead early on Friday morning at Silver City mall on Rajpur Road on Friday morning, the fifth murder in the district in 15 days. The victim was identified as Vikram Sharma, allegedly a gangster with cases booked against him in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Police said the matter is being viewed as a gang war incident considering preliminary investigation. The victim had about 50 cases against him, out of which nearly 30 were related to murder, police said. Sharma was carrying a pistol with him reportedly for self-defence but did not get a change to use it. According to inspector general (Garhwal) Rajeev Swaroop, the victim Vikram Sharma (45) was coming out of a gym located at Silver City Mall on Rajpur Road when he was shot. He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. He had a stone crusher business at Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district.  According to information, the accused knew the victim’s routine and the time he usually came out of the gym. Two shooters fired at him near the mall escalator. Three bullets hit him, including one in the head. After the shooting, the attackers fled the scene with another accomplice who was waiting outside the mall on a motorcycle. According to Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh, the incident occurred at about 10:15 AM. Two attackers opened rapid fire on Sharma as he was leaving the gym. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police are examining footage from CCTVs in the area. According to the police, the deceased was a history-sheeter with more than 50 criminal cases registered against him. The possibility of a gang war is also being investigated. The police have contacted their Jharkhand counterparts for further details. Sharma was allegedly a notorious gangster in Jharkhand and is said to be the mentor of Jharkhand gangster Akhilesh. About nine years ago, when Akhilesh was arrested by the police in Jamshedpur, the Jharkhand Police came to Dehradun and arrested Sharma too. After being released on bail, he settled in Dehradun. He was sent back to jail in 2017 and later, in 2021, the court granted him bail with certain conditions. While living in the Race Course area of Dehradun, Sharma was involved in property dealing and mining businesses in Uttarakhand.
