DEHRADUN, 3 Jan: BJP’s State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan on Saturday stated that the person accused of making derogatory remarks against women has no connection with the party and that the party strongly condemns such statements. Without naming the person, Chauhan was reportedly referring to a recent statement made by husband of Cabinet Minister Rekha Arya, Girdhari Lal Sahu.
Chauhan alleged that the Congress is not only fuelling misinformation in connection with the Ankita Bhandari case but is also extending it patronage for political purposes. He further expressed concern that the repeated demand for a CBI inquiry at this stage could inadvertently provide legal leverage to those already facing conviction, while accusing the Congress of damaging the image of Uttarakhand by portraying the murder of a student from Assam as Naxalite-style violence.
Responding to media queries, Chauhan asserted that the person making irresponsible and objectionable comments about women does not hold any post in the BJP organisation nor has any formal association with the party. He asserted that the BJP accords the highest respect to Matri Shakti and will not tolerate such remarks or the ideology behind them under any circumstances.
On the opposition’s sustained demand for a CBI probe into the Ankita Bhandari case, Chauhan stated that raising such a demand repeatedly could weaken the case and potentially assist those on trial by opening unnecessary legal loopholes. He accused the Congress of committing a grave insult to the deceased girl by repeatedly floating new names in the guise of a so-called ‘VIP’ without any evidence, purely to derive political mileage. He questioned the Congress’s intent, pointing out that the same party has historically derided the CBI by calling it a government-controlled agency and alleging that it framed its leaders, yet is now seeking an investigation by the very same agency. He also questioned whether the Congress would adopt a similar stand in other CBI cases involving its own leaders.
Chauhan also referred to the recent murder of an Tripura student in Selakui and termed the attempt by the Congress to give the incident a racial or Naxal colour as highly unfortunate. He reminded that the police investigations have clearly established that the crime was committed by certain anti-social elements, resulting in the student’s death. He added that five accused have been arrested so far and efforts are on to nab one absconding accused. He further stated that the governments of Tripura and Uttarakhand are in constant touch over the matter and assured that such incidents would not be repeated and that those responsible would not be spared.
He concluded by stating that the BJP remains fully alert on issues of law & order in the state and will not allow any conspiracy to succeed. While protests are part of a democratic system, he said they should not be politicised to the extent of obstructing development, asserting that the BJP is committed to ensuring the uninterrupted progress of Uttarakhand.
