RUDRAPUR, 20 Dec: Senior journalist Pradeep Phutela has been appointed Convener of the National Journalists’ Federation, Uttarakhand. His appointment is being seen as a move that will further strengthen the voice of journalists’ interests in the state. National President Pabitra Mohan Samantaray issued his appointment letter and stated that a new executive committee should be formed soon to strengthen the organisation.
Pradeep Phutela has been active in the field of journalism for the past 37 years and is known throughout the Kumaon region as a strong, fearless, and committed journalist. He began his journalism career in 1988 with Amar Ujala. Since then, he has gained experience in news gathering, editing, and analysis while working with several prestigious newspapers and media organisations, including Punjab Kesari and Uttar Ujala.
After his appointment as the convener of the National Journalists Federation, Uttarakhand, Pradeep Phutela said that the problems faced by journalists in the state are serious and have been neglected for a long time. He clarified that the federation will play an active role in addressing issues such as journalists’ safety, remuneration, accreditation, health insurance, and social security. He stated that a delegation from the organisation will soon meet the Chief Minister and the Director General, Information, to formally present the problems and demands of journalists. Phutela said that the press is considered the fourth pillar of democracy, but even today, this fourth pillar lacks constitutional recognition, making this group the most insecure and neglected. He emphasised that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of journalists, considering them not merely as news providers but as vigilant guardians of society. He said that the Uttarakhand unit will be formed soon.
Various journalist organisations, social activists, and senior journalists have extended their best wishes on his appointment, expressing hope that, under his leadership, the National Journalists’ Federation, Uttarakhand will strongly advocate for the rights of journalists and succeed in bringing about positive changes at the grassroots level.
