Dehradun, 14 Jan: BJP leader Ravindra Jugran today submitted a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Central University, requesting exemption of the university from the CUET entrance examination, which has been conducted at the all-India level for the past three years.
In his letter, Ravindra Jugran stated that due to the difficult geographical conditions of the hill region and inadequate publicity of the entrance examination, the experience of the last three years shows that a large number of seats in almost all affiliated colleges of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Central University remain vacant after the CUET-based admission process. He pointed out that this situation is particularly severe in colleges located in Dehradun, with the highest number of vacant seats reported in MKP Women’s College, Dehradun.
Following this issue, Ravindra Jugran filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Uttarakhand High Court, after which an arrangement was made to fill the vacant seats on the basis of Class 12 merit. This arrangement has now also been formally approved in the Executive Council (EC) meeting of Garhwal Central University.
In view of this, Ravindra Jugran requested the university to approach the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to seek exemption for Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Central University from the CUET system.
He further urged that, if the CUET system is not discontinued, the university should ensure wide publicity of the CUET entrance examination in intermediate colleges affiliated with the Uttarakhand Board, CBSE Board, and ISC Board, as students in these colleges often remain unaware of the entrance examination.
Jugran also stated that last year there was severe mismanagement in the conduct of the CUET examination for Garhwal Central University, with examination centres being set up as far away as Noida, Meerut, and Ghaziabad.
