Dehradun, 18 Dec: The Government of India has reconstituted the Expert Appraisal Committee for Nuclear, Defence and other Strategic Projects under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The government has appointed Rear Admiral (Retd) Om Prakash Singh Rana as its new chairman. The reconstitution has been carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, through an order issued by the ministry on 15 December, 2025.
It may be shared here that Rear Admiral Om Prakash Singh Rana, AVSM, VSM (Retd), brings with him vast experience in strategic and administrative roles. He is a native of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand and is currently residing in Dehradun. His appointment has been welcomed in the state, particularly in the Garhwal region, as a matter of pride.
The committee will function under the IA Division of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and will be responsible for the appraisal of proposals related to nuclear power plants, nuclear fuel complexes, defence projects and other strategic installations across the country. The committee will also examine proposals at various stages, including detailed environmental impact assessment and environment management plan studies, review and analysis of submitted reports, and recommendations on environmental clearance or rejection of projects.
As per its mandate, the committee is also expected to suggest safeguards to mitigate adverse environmental impacts, recommend suitable pollution control measures and appropriate technologies, ensure effective monitoring of environmental safeguards, and identify areas for research and development related to environmental management of nuclear and strategic projects.
