Rising incidents of violence against children very concerning: Dr Geeta Khanna

my uttarakhand news Bureau

DEHRADUN, 14 Jun: The Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Dr Geeta Khanna, has taken cognizance of several serious incidents involving children and adolescents reported recently from different districts of Uttarakhand.
Describing as extremely serious the incident in the Vikasnagar area in which a 12-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted and suffered a fractured arm, the recovery of an abducted minor girl in Haridwar, and the alleged lynching of a Dalit youth in Tehri district who had reportedly gone to meet a minor girl due to a romantic relationship, the Commission has sought detailed action-taken reports from the respective Senior Superintendents of Police.
Dr Khanna stated that, on the one hand, children and adolescents are becoming victims of violence, abuse, and crime, while on the other hand, social prejudice, intolerance, and the growing tendency to take the law into one’s own hands are emerging as serious threats to society. She emphasized that such incidents not only raise questions about law and order but also indicate an erosion of moral and humanitarian values within society.
“This situation is extremely alarming, and society needs to engage in serious self-reflection.”
The Commission Chairperson further stated that violence, assault, harassment, or violation of the rights of children and adolescents cannot be accepted under any circumstances. The Commission has sought reports on the actions taken by the police and concerned departments in the incidents reported from Vikasnagar, Haridwar, and Tehri, as well as in similar cases.
Geeta Khanna also noted that a significant meeting has been convened at the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on 18 June 2026 to discuss the increasing incidents of violence, missing children, abductions, social exploitation, and law-and-order issues affecting children and adolescents.
The meeting will bring together representatives from the police department, the women and child development department, the education department, the labour department, the social welfare department, child protection mechanisms, and other relevant stakeholders. Comprehensive discussions will be held, and a concrete action plan will be formulated to ensure the safety and protection of children.
Dr Khanna reiterated that the safety and well-being of children and adolescents remain the highest priority, and the Commission will continue to closely monitor such cases to ensure that strict legal action is taken against those found responsible.
