The heat in Uttarakhand has been displaying its full intensity over the past few days. A warning regarding the prevalence of hot winds in the plains of the state has also been issued for May 20. According to the forecast released by the Meteorological Centre, a ‘Yellow Alert’ for hot winds has been issued for Dehradun and Haridwar, as well as the border areas of Uttarkashi. Meanwhile, light rainfall is likely in the higher-altitude regions of Pithoragarh, Chamoli, and Uttarkashi. The weather is expected to remain dry in other districts.

Mercury Nears 40 Degrees in Doon

Along with the plains, the heat has now begun to make its presence felt in the hilly regions as well. While the weather in the mountains remained pleasant during the early days of May, intense sunshine and rising temperatures during the day have now increased difficulties for residents there too. In the capital city of Doon, the mercury has hovered close to 40 degrees Celsius—a figure considered to be above the seasonal average. According to the Meteorological Department, there appear to be no significant signs of immediate relief from the heat, and temperatures could rise further in the coming days. Consequently, people are facing a dual challenge due to the combined effects of the heat and hot winds. A look at the statistics reveals that Doon’s maximum temperature was recorded at 39.7 degrees—four degrees above normal—marking the highest temperature recorded so far this season. Similarly, the minimum night-time temperature stood at 23.1 degrees—one degree above normal. Similar conditions prevailed across other parts of the state as well.
