PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh averred that the seven family members who allegedly died by suicide late on Monday in Panchkula, Haryana, had stayed on rent in Dehradun eight to nine months ago, but were not residents of Dehradun at present and are known to be from Chandigarh. The Uttarakhand registration number car in which the family allegedly committed suicide was found to be of an acquaintance of theirs who is a Dehradun resident. The SSP issued this statement after the news went viral on social media on Tuesday, claiming that the family originally hailed from Dehradun. Singh said that the Panchkula police informed him that a call was made to emergency services at about 10 PM on Monday reporting a suspected suicide attempt in a parked car in Sector 27 of Panchkula. The local police reached the spot and found six family members dead inside the vehicle while one was unconscious. The police took that person to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The family allegedly committed suicide due to financial pressure and debt. The deceased included a wife and husband, their three children and the husband’s elderly parents. Two of the individuals have been identified as Praveen Mittal and his father Deshraj Mittal. The family had reportedly travelled to Panchkula to attend a spiritual event. Singh said that the car had a UK07 registration number that was registered in Dehradun that led many to believe that the deceased were Dehradun residents. However, the initial inquiry revealed that the deceased, Praveen Mittal, son of Deshraj Mittal, had lived on rent in Kaulagarh, Dehradun, about eight to nine months ago. The family was originally from Chandigarh and had not been residing in Dehradun at the time of the incident. “A vehicle found at the incident site was registered in the name of Gambhir Singh Negi of Maldevta area. Upon being contacted, Negi informed the police that he met Praveen Mittal during some work related to an NGO. Mittal had previously operated an NGO named Child Life Care Mission, which is now non-functional. Regarding the vehicle registered in his name in Dehradun, Negi told the police that during their acquaintance, he financed the vehicle in his name on Mittal’s request, which Mittal later used,” the SSP said. Singh stated that as per the initial investigation, the family had been living in Chandigarh at the time of their death and had no direct link of their alleged suicide with Dehradun. “We have received no request regarding conducting any investigation or inquiry in Dehradun from the Panchkula police regarding this case so far. However, if they do contact us, we will fully cooperate with them,” he added.
